Power Reserve from Photovoltaics for Improving Frequency Response in the Isolated System

Appropriate frequency response is an issue of great importance in power system management, especially islanded one. An energy-based method for assessing a system’s response, which needed to prevent under load shedding (UFLS), introduced. Renewable generation, such as wind turbine (WT) and photovoltaic (PV) facilities, reduces the ability resist imbalances increases risks consumer disconnections by UFLS system, even total collapse. To estimate amount additional fast reserve, equation was developed, relating moment inertia, demand dynamics, available synchronous generating units. Clustering units based on their respond changes low inertia conditions allows potential be assessed, providing information its deficiency defined state. The proposed applied Israeli up 307 MW from PV facilities found 350 contingency, when percentage renewable energy reached 30% annual production. This study focused proportional (PFR) step (SFR) that can provide. Using this may contribute adoption into without detrimental impact improve reliability electricity supply.
